Thursday, June 26th, 2008PAT Testing has become a big growth area for electrical contractors recently because of legal work and electrical requirements.
Employers are putting forward existing staff like caretakers so they can perform PAT testing themselves.
Electric shocks caused by electric appliances or electrical installations could lead to injuries from falls. Electrical workers aren’t the only employees at risk, any employees using poorly installed or faulty equipment are in danger of shocks or fires. Although the current recommended PAT testing methods, record keeping and test frequencies are considered to be best practice for ensuring electrical equipment is properly maintained, they are not ‘legal requirements’.
The Electricity at Work Regulations place a legal responsibility on employers, workers and self-employed persons to comply with the provisions of the regulations and take ”reasonably practicable steps” to make sure that no danger comes from the use of such equipment. Many businesses implement a program of maintenance, inspection and testing of portable equipment.
Training courses will teach you pat testing methods and how to use PAT testing equipment. Once training is complete the pupil will be able to test safely and without harm to others. Technical equipment that may be sensitivelike some IT systems will require additional training.
PAT testing training courses consist of learning the legislation, hazard training, user checks, visual inspections, fuses, construction of different class portable appliances, power tools and extension leads.
